Sacred Congregation for Catholic Education, Educational Guidelines on Human Love. Sex education guidelines (1.XII.1983).
One of the most central documents of the Magisterium of the Church regarding sexuality and its education.
The instruction itself sets the axes of its content:
“The harmonious development of the human personality progressively reveals in man the image of the son of God. “True education proposes the formation of the human person in order to its ultimate goal.” In dealing with Christian education, the Second Vatican Council pointed out the need to offer “a positive and prudent sexual education” to children and young people. (…) This document, prepared with the help of experts in educational problems and submitted to extensive consultation, has a specific objective: to examine the pedagogical aspect of education, indicating appropriate guidelines for the integral formation of the Christian, according to the vocation of each one.” (no. 1)
The entire document is a permanent source of criteria for sexual affective education for children and adolescents.
Among them stands out this profound definition of human sexuality:
“Sexuality is a basic element of personality; a proper way of being, of expressing oneself, of communicating with others, of feeling, expressing and living human love. For this reason, it is an integral part of the development of the personality and of its educational process: «The truth is that in sex lie the characteristic notes that constitute people as men and women on the biological, psychological and spiritual plane, thus having much of a part in their individual evolution and in their insertion in society.” (No. 4)
